Creating a Sense of Space

You can make any room feel larger when you place the furniture so as to create a sense of space.
• Place large pieces of furniture on opposite ends of the room and away from doors for an uncluttered entrance.
• Avoid competing focal points on one wall. For example, placing a large entertainment center on the same wall as a fireplace adds a second focal point and creates a visual imbalance.
Match the scale of the furniture with the space it occupies: small pieces on large walls will feel lost; large pieces will overpower small spaces.
• Place sofas and chairs eight to ten inches away from walls, and angle chairs or tables so the room doesn’t look stiff and uninviting.
• Create a conversation area: Flank a fireplace or love seat with two chairs for cozy chats. Add an area rug to define the space.
• Arrange a bookcase to display art and photos, too.
• Group accessories in threes: a vase filled with flowers, a decorative bowl, and a stack of books on a table will be interesting without creating the feeling of clutter.
• Not all pictures and artwork must be hung. Photos placed on a plate, or a gallery ledge add interest.
