Minimizing Dust and Mites

Dust mites come out after a normal breakdown of fibers in pillows, drapes, clothes, linens and other furnishings. Although you can’t rid your home of dust mites, you can take steps to decrease your exposure to them.
• Use air cleaners to keep pure air circulating and cover vents with filters.
• Keep the relative humidity low because dust mites can’t survive in low humidity.
• Maintain heating and air conditioning units at least once a year.
• Vacuum bedrooms and mattresses once a week and use a “damp” cloth to clean furniture.
• Use pillows and bedcovers made of synthetics and wash
bedding once a week.
• Reduce clutter and consider leather furniture over fabric-upholstered furniture (which trap allergens). This will help to minimize the dust and the dust mites.
• Vacuum often with a machine that reduces dust emissions.
• Where possible, avoid carpeting and thick rugs. Bare surfaces like hardwood or tile are easy to clean and help prevent dust buildup.
